“Emergency Entrance” is an exhibition of 8 artists and 2 curators graduating from School4artists 3/2024, a project of ICA-Sofia. The exhibition presents the newest ideas and works of the participants in this alternative education program for artists and curators who are at the beginning of their professional ca- reers. The program aims to update and deepen their knowledge of art today; to convince them that what they do is important for the public in Sofia, the country and the world; to assist them in orienting and positioning themselves in the art world today.

After the first of the seven months of communication in the context of the school, the participants acquired the joke-qualification of “shkoltzi” (from the Bulgarian „школа“ - school), avoiding words such as “student”, “cadet”, “pupil”, which do not reflect well the atmosphere of getting to know each other, mutual enrichment, gaining knowledge and self-confidence. In this exhibition, our colleagues will pub- licly demonstrate that they have identified their “emergency entrance” into contemporary art practices. “Emergency”, because in the context of the Bulgarian art scene, the official, “ceremonial” entrances to world art are still a painful deficit.

Engaging with the theory and practice of contemporary art in a cycle of mini-lecture courses, discus- sions, joint visits to art events in Sofia, Varna, etc., started in May 2024 and will culminate with the exhi- bition Emergency Entrance. The exhibition is as much a product of individual artists’ ideas and works as it is of the process of collective existence and creation inherent in all editions (2017, 2019, and 2024) of the ICA-Sofia educational platform under the general title School4artists.

A program of events is planned in the framework of the exhibition for which separate information will be available.

School4artists 3/2024 is supported by the Program “Culture” of the Sofia Municipality. The help generous- ly offered by The Singer-Zahariev Foundation, Sofia, and Gaudenz B. Ruff allowed us to implement import- ant activities within the project. For the public program of School4artists 3/2024, ICA-Sofia is partnering with the Cultural Center of the Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski”.

Part of the 2024 annual program of ICA-Sofia entitled "Superpositions 3*". The programme is guided by the principle that interdisciplinarity is a major vector in contemporary art practice. The series of exhibitions examine the connections between art and fields such as: politics / poetics; science and technology; popular culture; gender and social movements; ecology and migration. The discursive couples are reflected in the structure of each exhibition - a dialogue between two authors - one from Bulgaria and one guest.

*Superposition is a fundamental principle of quantum physics, according to which every elementary particle exists in all its theoretically possible positions simultaneously; but when measured or observed, it gives a result corresponding to only one possible configuration.

The annual programme "Superpositions" is supported by the National Fund Culture / Annual Programme for Support of Professional Organisations in the Field of Arts
