Visual artist, film-maker, writer, author, producer, chef, and a DJ – one may say a lot of things about Jihan El-Tahri, the artist who is crisscrossing the world while escaping easy definitions. Traveling all around the Global South, Jihan has also worked for global news channels such as the BBC, Reuters, PBS. She has produced many influential movies and documentaries, applying her own sensitivities to the research and the stories told “from the vantage point of the South”.
Jihan El-Tahri is in Sofia for a new production entitled Companions in History, a collaborative project with Radostin Sedevchev which is dedicated to the story of tricontinental alliances and solidarities connecting Bulgaria to the decolonial movement.

The screening at the Cinema House in Sofia on September 29th, 2024 offers for the first time the Bulgarian audiences a chance to grasp the visions and the concerns of this powerful woman. Throughout many decades she has collected stories from Africa, the Americas and Asia, looking for justice and alliances.
Jihan will introduce and discus with the audience three of her most relevant movies Cinema Died at Camp Boiro, 2017; CUBA: An African Odyssey, 2007; and Nasser: Egypt’s Modern Pharaohs, 2015.

The screening will finish with a dj-set prepared by Jihan at the Cush.BAR of the Cinema House.

*The film screenings are for one ticket of 10 BGN for all three films. You can buy at the cinema box office or online here

The screening is part of the public program of "Living Together: Chapter III Narrating", curated by Katia Anguelova and Lucrezia Chippitelli, within the project SUPERPOSITIONS THREE of the Institute of Contemporary Art – Sofia, realized with the financial support of the National Culture Fund of Bulgaria for the program "Creation ’23”.
The event is organised in partnership with Sofia Documental Film Festival. The entire festival program here

Part of the 2024 annual program of ICA-Sofia entitled "Superpositions 3*". The programme is guided by the principle that interdisciplinarity is a major vector in contemporary art practice. The series of exhibitions examine the connections between art and fields such as: politics / poetics; science and technology; popular culture; gender and social movements; ecology and migration. The discursive couples are reflected in the structure of each exhibition - a dialogue between two authors - one from Bulgaria and one guest.

*Superposition is a fundamental principle of quantum physics, according to which every elementary particle exists in all its theoretically possible positions simultaneously; but when measured or observed, it gives a result corresponding to only one possible configuration.

The annual programme "Superpositions" is supported by the National Fund Culture / Annual Programme for Support of Professional Organisations in the Field of Arts
