Open call for curatorial projects!

This is an open call for all interested professionals to state their interest in working out a concrete curatorial project! The curator or the team of curators will be selected according the following procedure:

  • → Respond to the open call and state your interest in the project – via no more than 2 pages statement, including name and contact details;
  • → Invitation to a short list of 3-5 statements of interest to converse with the organizers and to develop a more elaborate curatorial project within the announced thematic framework;
  • → Selection of a curatorial project.

The project selected by ICA-Sofia will respect the listed modules and will work out themes that are relevant for the development of Bulgarian art in the last 25-30 years, as well as for the role played by the ICA-Sofia in this multifaceted process. The project will rely on the free choice of works and artists, events and sub-themes, unrestricted by the practice of the ICA-Sofia though integral for the history of contemporary art in Bulgaria as part of the world at large.

The selected project will be realized as a collaboration between the curator (team of curators), with the support of ICA-Sofia and in partnership with the hosting space (in the process of TBD). The planned realization period of time is – ongoing program of events; exhibition – fall of 2020.

 → Statements of interest will be accepted in electronic form until 6 pm on Monday, February 10th, 2020 at: This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

The project: “Close Encounters. Visual Dialogues” (Part 2, Back2school), initiated by ICA-Sofia, aims at the re-integration of the scene of Bulgarian contemporary art practices and artists into the European scene through organizing visits by leading European curators to Sofia with public lectures, studio visits and meetings with artists. These curators are either in the process of preparing an important biennale/contemporary art event anywhere in the world; or are active museum directors with open programs who can appreciate the work of Bulgarian artists; or they are active young curators born in Bulgaria or elsewhere, who are working in an active career mode in Europe's leading art centers.

The Institute of Contemporary Art – Sofia presents

“Video Europe for all” – a display of diversity in public space

Opening - 23. 04. 2018, Monday, 17:00 - 00:00
image: Aneta Mona-Chsa & Lucia Tkachova, Try again. Fail again. Fail better. video, 2011, 7 min. 57 sec.

The project “Video Europe for all” benefits art in the Sofia underpass. It presents a series of projections of video art works of leading artists who were born and/or live in various European countries. In the underpass in front of the “Tsarevets” building on Eagle’s Bridge in Sofia, in a specially arranged space surprises and challenges, beauty and thought, politics and romantics are awaiting you; a different and controversial Europe is there to be seen – rich in stories, cultures, individuals, opinions…
