Plamen Dejanoff: Foundation Requirement

Plamen Dejanoff

Foundation Requirement

For his first one-person show in Bulgaria Plamen Dejanoff (b. 1970, Veliko Turnovo), who has lived in Vienna for years, is presenting his new project titled “Foundation Requirement”.
The objects in the show – sculptures created especially for this exhibition, are fragments from a complex investigation into the memory, the tradition, the ways of production that have been integrated within everyday life while at the same time being part of art. The artist is emancipating and abstracting familiar forms and elements from the architectural decoration of historical buildings by transforming them into open decorative structures – objects of contemplation, which are devoid of their utilitarian function and yet keep its memory.
The artist is producing unique material presence for his objects in the exhibition space while using the traditional materials of wood and stone, known ever since antiquity as basic materials for both building and art. He is triggering spatial, tactile, and cultural associations.
Plamen Dejanoff, while maintaining his status of an autonomous artist, is able to be a building contractor, a marketing expert and a producer while realizing his large scale projects that are exploring the complex relations between art and business today.
“Foundation Requirement“ is the second project of Dejanoff’s to create a house-as-sculpture. His first one titled “The Bronze House” was shown in 2006 in MUMOK, the Vienna museum for contemporary art. He is planning to present it soon in Sofia and in Arbanasi - The Plamen Dejanoff Foundation for the reconstruction, conservation and preservation of cultural heritage in Bulgaria.
Parallel to the show in Sofia, the artist is showing segments from his complex project “Foundation Requirement” in 21er Haus/Belvedere Museum of Contemporary Art in Vienna (23.09.-29.11.2015).

The exhibition in Sofia is organized by the Embassy of Austria in Sofia and the Institute of Contemporary Art-Sofia.
